Another Giant QR Code Crops Up!
It seems that the Hackerspace Charlotte/Southern Resources QR Code has found a rival in its quest for being known as the world’s largest QR code. Skanz, which is a new social networking platform that uses QR codes to link together social media, mobile technology, and fashion, created its own giant quick response code that covers a Jersey Shore racetrack.
The Skanz Code, spanning 10,000 square feet on Wall Stadium Speedway, can be scanned two miles above its surface. The code reportedly took 80 gallons of white and black paint and is very visible from the skies. Family and friends of Skanz founders were the ones who took on the task of painting the enormous code.
To launch the code, Skanz pulled off a promotional stunt that involved professional skydivers parachuting above the QR code and scanning it from the air.
Scanning the Skanz Code allows one to automatically join a “Skan to Win” contest. Through a random draw, one scanner will win two tickets to the “Watch The Throne: Jay-Z & Kanye West” concert tour. The prize includes round-trip plane tickets to any of the shows. The contest period ends on Oct. 15 and the winner will be announced on Skanz’s Twitter and Facebook.
According to Skanz CMO Tammy Lewis, the QR code social media platform started the concept with a simple premise, which is to “create an interactive video to recast QR codes as Socialprints” and then added some excitement and drama. He said that they also wanted “viral way to build consumer awareness and demonstrate the value and usefulness of QR codes, or Socialprints, in making sharing your digital life fun, easy and on the go.”
By recasting the codes as Socialprints, the social media service gives users a new way to use QR codes as a digital venue for all their social media and contact information. Skanz allows users to generate and then customize their own free, secure, mobile website and then share it with friends and other contacts using their smartphones. Those who scan a user’s QR code will get to view his or her “Skanzsite” on their phones and will then be allowed to call, text, or email the user, or to access his or her Facebook page, Twitter feed, and LinkedIn profile, and even to see his or her photos, favorite videos, and other personal information.
