Bakon Vodka Employs QR Codes to Increase Consumer Engagement

After being the first ever meat-flavored spirit, Bakon Vodka has come up with a new twist for its brand by embellishing its bottles with unique quick response codes. The QR code is its way of individualizing or personalizing each bottle for its owner.

But what exactly does a Bakon Vodka QR code do and what makes it one-of-a-kind?

Every QR code allows the Bakon Vodka bottle to be tracked and allows the scanner to enter a gaming environment and be able to earn badges. You can get badges by buying new bottles of this uniquely bacon-flavored spirit, by trying out a new recipe, or even by passing the bottle on to a friend in a new and different location.

According to Bakon Vodka co-founder Sven Liden, this new QR code marketing campaign is like a Foursquare for products. For those who do not know, Foursquare is a location-based social networking site for mobile devices.

Bakon Vodka’s social game solution was designed and implemented by Seattle-based social marketing and sales specialist Ethofy. Ethopy CEO Dan Frumin said that while a QR code is typically used in marketing to take people to a site or to a purchase location, Bakon Vodka wanted to use the technology in a unique way and give vodka drinkers a fun and interactive experience.

Bakon Vodka consumers play on their handsets and share their scan history as well as their comments on Facebook, Liden related. “Social games and badges incent customers to scan and share while simultaneously giving us a deeper understanding of how customers experience our product,” he added.

The company expects that these new bottles will boost its thriving social media community by establishing active engagement between the brand and its more than 54,000 Facebook fans, as well as its 5,000 Twitter followers.

The new personalized Bakon Vodka bottles are now being shipped throughout 41 states in the country where the brand is currently available. The bottles also sport a new design to ensure better shelf visibility. This means that they can be easily spotted in bars and in liquor shops.

Bakon Vodka and Ethopy are currently planning the next wave of features for the new bottles, including a social game, scavenger hunts, customized daily fortunes, and even photo contests.
