Facebook’s Attempts At Improving Mobile Experience
Setting aside the problems that Facebook may be facing in terms of stock prices (we will leave that for the financial analysts and professionals), there is another problem that has been holding Facebook back in terms of finances and potential – mobile advertising.
If you, like me, check your Facebook account on your mobile phone, tablet or other mobile devices, rather than checking on the feed on a laptop or desktop, then you will know that the one-column-display on mobile devices gives users more peace of mind because of the lack of space for ads.
But in a recent announcement, Zuckerberg DID touch on mobile software and its updates and he also told the press there that today, nearly ninety percent of mobile software developments are done up internally by product development groups outside of the team’s own mobile team. Yes, they are, apparently, separate.
Zuckerberg also admitted that there is so much more money to be made if Facebook ads were to appear on mobile devices and it continues to be the void that needs covering. But even with all that said, Zuckerberg did not reveal a definitive plan on how he and his team intend to close the gap. Analysis shows that interaction between users and others is higher on mobile devices compared to when they are logged into Facebook on desktops. And as with all advertising, interaction is the ultimate goal.
Zuckerberg also admitted that relying too heavily on HTML5 was Facebook’s biggest mistake to-date but they are looking for ways to counter its effects.
On another note, Facebook DID release a new iOS app which makes reading Facebook feeds on an Apple product far smoother and better. If you are an Apple user and have updated your Facebook app on your mobile device, please do share your experience with us here. The company is also quickly updating its software for Android too.
The integrated Facebook 3.0 spells an important change because it lets people stay logged in while allowing them to continue with their everyday usage of the device while Facebook maintains the ability to track the user’s preferences in hope of delivering relevant info and ads to the particular user in the near future.
I am sure Facebook team of techies is working tirelessly behind the scene to deliver a powerful change for Android operating system too…it is only a matter of time, really.
