Fox Searchlight Promotes Martha Marcy May Marlene Exclusively With QR Codes

In the film industry, Sean Durkin is not only known for the awards that he won and the dramatics that he is capable of, but also for his uncanny ability to pick and produce films that are far more dramatic and surreal than other commercial films. So, in other words, when you see Sean Durkin, you can expect to either feel put-off or completely awed.

Fox Searchlight is currently promoting their new film Martha Marcy May Marlene, starring the younger sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen twins, in a rather unconventional way too. For the very first time, the studio is releasing trailers and sneak peeks of the unconventional movie completely via QR Codes. I must say that it is reportedly a very elaborate QR Code marketing campaign which sees the studio spending a lot of money on printing posters, standees and coasters all around New York city and Los Angeles. The film is set to start airing on October 21st.

You don’t have to be in NYC and LA to access the QR Codes, though, because the trailers and sneak peeks can be found on their website (as well as the QR Code) and popular video streaming site, YouTube. Curious about the movie, here’s the link to the website which, interesting, opens up to two QR Codes. Take a look and see for yourself

The film also stars John Hawkes, an Academy Award nominee. It should be interesting. The storyline revolves around a young woman who joins a cult but decides on turning back; hence, her effort to reconnect with her family, i.e. the society. The film debuted at Sundance film and Sean Durkin won the Best U.S. Director award under the Dramatic category.

With that said, it is understandable that the marketers and promoters of the film will find it hard to promote a movie with such a dramatic theme and storyline. Marketing it through QR Codes is a fantastic idea since we believe that the world is finally coming to terms with and is willing to embrace QR Code technology and accept its potential.
