Largest QR Code for Guinness World Records

hackerqrcode

We have heard of large-scale QR codes created to attract people’s attention.  But the one being painted by Hackerspace Charlotte on the roof of the Southern Resources building in Charlotte, NC’s NoDa district is for the Guinness World Records.

The giant QR code will cover most of the roof’s 10,000 square-feet area, with the pixels estimated to cover at least one square meter each.  The two-dimensional bar code will also be big enough to be seen by satellite, which means that it will show up if you look at Southern Resources or Hackerspace on Google Maps or Google Earth.

The NoDa QR code will be seen from airplanes flying to and from the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.

People who scan the code with their smartphones will be taken to a website created especially for the project, Hackerspace Charlotte’s Ryan Stachurski says.

Hackerspace is a NoDa-based non-profit group that serves as venue for and initiates innovative projects.  The group is behind the giant QR code idea and partnered with scrap metal recycler Southern Resources because they needed a huge roof as platform for the project.

The code aims to generate a little more web traffic for both Southern Resources and Hackerspace.

According to Guinness, the current record-holder for the largest quick response code is from Bolzano, Italy, with a 16.81 square-meter size.  There have also been other big QR codes, like the 159-square meter code created by Audi Japan and the codes displayed at the Cowboy Stadium’s HDTV screens in 2009.

The painters are expected to finish the code by Wednesday when Guinness will certify the world record.
