Nordstrom’s Joins the Rooftop QR Code Craze
Just as we predicted, another quick response code is on the loose on another building’s rooftop. Oh yes, rooftop QR codes that are intended for satellite imagery — or on-air scanning — are indeed the trend these days.
Nordstrom’s Automotive of Garretson has just put up a 576-square-foot QR code on the roof of one of its buildings. Sure, it is not as large as the one by Southern Resources and Hackerspace Charlotte, but it is clear enough to be scanned from up in the skies.
Scanning the two-dimensional matrix code takes one to an information page about the local automobile recycling company. Although Nordstrom’s didn’t reveal what kind of information it is, it hinted that it has something to do with the history of the family business.
According to Shannon Nordstrom, the company’s general manager, the idea to install a big QR code on the rooftop started as a joke. Nordstrom’s has its slogan painted on one of its building rooftops and his sister suggested that he put the company’s website up on the roof after people on her plane talked about seeing the slogan while they flew over it. He joked about placing a QR code and seeing if people can scan it, but the more he thought about the idea, the more he realized it made sense.
Nordstrom’s QR code is made up of 18 4×8-foot panels laid together. However, for those who do not have access to a hot air balloon, a parachute, or a plane and are therefore unable to scan the code, a scannable photo of it can be found on Nordstrom’s Facebook page.
Now, we can’t wait to see who else will be putting up QR codes on their roofs as a new marketing strategy.
