QR Codes Project Win Educator’s Choice Award

classroom

Last July, Microsoft held the Partners in Learning 2011 U.S. Innovative Educators Forums in Seattle. During the event, Microsofts announced the winning projects that will represent the United States at the Global Partners in Learning Forum that is going to be held in November in Washington.

Eleven educators got their moment in the spotlight as their projects were chosen to be finalists.

Melanie Wiscount from the Palmyra Area High School came up with a project that involved QR codes. She asked her students to come up with a podcast about a business, organization or attraction that were located within 15 miles of their school. The podcast would detail their venue’s history, and the video would then be accessed using QR codes. Wiscount won the Educators’ Choice Award for the event.

This is a great project that fuses education with technology. What’s more it is fairly easy to recreate this project at all grade levels and using any variety of topics.

This is just one of the uses of QR codes in the field of education. In the past, BeQRious has reported on the use of QR codes with flash cards that makes cheating a little bit more difficult. We have also reported on how QR codes make books more interesting and interactive, such as what Ubimark did with the Jules Vernes classic Around the World in 80 Days.

Educators also use QR codes to give out lengthy URLs to their students, attach real time multimedia content to printed materials and can facilitate game-based learnings, as we have outlined here.

QR codes have also been used to make the periodic table of elements fun, as well as making it easy to share Moodle modules

There are a lot of uses for QR codes in school settings that it is not just a marketer’s tool anymore, but a way to make learning even more interesting, easy and fun.
