QR Codes Raise Awareness Killed Media Professionals in Syria

Reporters Without Borders has come up with what is called a shock campaign called #DeadTweet. It features a website with what looks like a bloody hand and an iPhone with a customized QR code in it.

When you scan the QR code, you are taken to a mobile site that looks like Twitter. You are then shown a series of tweets from a journalist going by the Twitter handle FS2424. The tweets start with a tweet informing us that the journalist is in a demonstration in Syria. Apparently, the Syrian military shows up at demonstration and starts roughing up the people. Some of the military saw the journalist taking pictures and runs after him. Check out what happens next by going to the site and scanning the QR code.

Reporters Without Borders aims to protect journalists from persecution and investigates the cases of journalists who are facing danger or death in the performance of their jobs. The DeadTweets campaign is aimed at making people aware of the plight of 38 journalists who have been killed in Syria since March 2011.

At the end of the tweets, you are also encouraged to share the campaign via Facebook and Twitter.

The French non-profit has used QR codes before. They first came out with a series of print ads in 2011 featuring pictures of dictators such as Gaddafi, Ahmadinejad and Putin. Scanning a QR code in the ad, you will be taken to a video of a mouth talking about the atrocities and censorship happening in their respective countries.

We have to admit that both of these campaigns are great uses of QR codes. If you have a message, create compelling content that makes people sit up and take notice and then put it behind a QR code. Remember to put up instructions on what they should do and if you want, social sharing would help your campaign gain ground.
