University of Virginia Launches Android Version of Its Popular App

The University of Virginia has released an Android version of their mobile app. The Android version comes a full year after the iPhone apps was launched.

The app provides maps for students to find their way around the campus. It also includes seven official University of Virginia songs, including the school’s theme. The mobile app is actually a collection of 26 different applications that has been designed for use of current and prospective students, faculty, staff, alumni, and even outsiders who have keen interest in the University and what’s happening in it.

This mobile app is a great tool for everybody in the school and making it available to Android devices is a great help for those who do not have iPhones or iPads. In fact, it really makes sense to have your mobile apps available for both platforms, and even beyond to other platforms. The iOS and Android OS, however, are the most popular platforms and it would not be an exaggeration to say that they have cornered a bulk of the smartphone market. iOS devices such as the iPhone and the iPad now have 28 percent of the market, while Android powered devices have around 39 percent of all smartphone users. Other platforms such as Blackberry, WebOS and proprietary operating systems share the remaining 33 percent!

University officials have expressed hope that the Android version would be as popular as its iPhone brother, which has been download more than 23,000 times in just a year. Not only that, the app recorded close to half a million sessions in the same time period.

Another University of Virginia-related mobile app, WahooBus, tracks the UTS buses, their routes and schedules. WahooBus was developed by U.Va. biomedical engineering graduate, Rohan Puri.
