Wimbledon NYC Promotion Goes Mobile

wimbledon2010

This is absolutely the kind of news that we want to see online! A big corporation getting involved in the QR code frenzy. And this time, it is banking giant….HSBC.

In their upcoming event for Wimbledon 2010 which is going to be held at the Rockefeller Center, the bank has decided to make use of QR Codes to promote the game…not that it needs any help but it will certainly make it all the more fun for fans of tennis, Wimbledon and also QR Codes. From June 21st to the 25th (the weeks leading up to the game), there will be complimentary activities that fans can access via QR Codes. The QR Codes will be printed on posters and other printed marketing material and posted all around Rockefeller Center and other parts of Manhattan for easy access. The QR Code campaign is also aiming at promoting their live screening of the event, not just the ticket sales.

For those who are curious about the wonders of QR Codes, here’s a short-take. QR Codes is a 2D barcode technology that links everyday people like you and me (with smart phones) to online content. Being a bridge between the offline and online world, owners of smart phones (like iPhone and Blackberry) can use a QR Code reader to scan the barcode. The scanner? The phone’s camera, of course! So, if you see a QR Code, is curious about it, load up the QR Code reader on your smart phone and scan the QR Code.

This is the first time that HSBC is doing things with so much technology involved but that is good news indeed. Users of smart phone get to access teaser content like videos, games, contests and also images.

Fans of tennis might be interested with the behind-the-scene videos – as with everyone else. We don’t know anyone who is NOT interested in behind-the-scene clips…for ANYTHING. Information and factual data will also be posted online.

Basically, the bank’s big aim is to engage fans of Wimbledon in a more interesting and interactive way. Good call. On the site, it has been said that users can play an EA Sports Grand Slam tennis too which should fun for tennis fans.

So, New Yorkers, keep your eye out for Wimbledon HSBC QR Codes!
